Post 8545 Conducts Blood Drive

John Massingill - 5/8/2025

Smithfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8545 continued its tradition of community service by partnering with the American Red Cross to host a successful blood drive on Wednesday, May 7th. The event was part of the fourth annual VFW Day of Service, a nationwide initiative under the VFW’s #StillServing campaign, highlighting veterans’ ongoing commitment to serving their communities.

The blood drive, held at the VFW Post Hall at 223 Washington Street, saw a strong turnout from local residents eager to contribute to a vital cause. Thanks to the generosity of donors, VFW Post 8545 was able to collect an impressive 30 units of blood. According to the American Red Cross, each unit of blood has the potential to save up to three lives, meaning this single blood drive could help save as many as 90 lives in the local community.

"This was the first time our post has hosted a blood drive, and it was a great experience for our members,” said Post Commander John Massingill. "We are also excited that this drive had 14 first-time donors who will hopefully, donate again. The VFW Day of Service provides a fantastic opportunity for our members to continue serving our community in meaningful ways. Partnering with the American Red Cross for this blood drive allowed us to directly contribute to the well-being of our neighbors.”

The #StillServing campaign emphasizes the continued dedication of veterans to serving their communities long after their military service ends. The annual VFW Day of Service encourages VFW posts across the nation to engage in various community-focused projects, addressing local needs and making a tangible difference.

American Red Cross Account Manager Robert Dalby added, "we are incredibly grateful for the partnership with VFW Post 8545 and the overwhelming support from the community. These 30 units of blood will make a significant impact on the lives of patients in need.”

VFW Post 8545 extends its sincere gratitude to all the donors who participated in the blood drive, the dedicated volunteers who helped make the event a success, and the American Red Cross for their invaluable partnership. This successful blood drive underscores the power of community collaboration and the enduring spirit of service embodied by the VFW and its members.
